Comprehensive SpecsArchitectural Specs

Use this 3-part SimpleSpecs™ master specification to specify manufactured simulated stone units for use as non-load-bearing veneer.

Simulated stone is composed of Portland cement, aggregates, and additives as determined by the manufacturer. It may be used in either exterior or interior locations. The tone is placed over a solid substrate such as concrete, masonry, or sheathing. The stone may be secured using metal lath and setting mortar or set in thinset mortar applied directly to the substrate. A weather barrier is typically placed behind the stone to prevent moisture infiltration into the interior of the structure.

Some simulated stone is susceptible to efflorescence, a condition in which moisture that enters the masonry is drawn to the exterior surface upon evaporation, bringing salts that exist within the masonry to the surface, where they are deposited as a white powder. Efflorescence can be easily removed using a specialty cleaner if caught early. Efflorescence tends to decrease over time as the salts decrease and shows up worse on darker surfaces.
