LEED Sustainable Project Requirements

Use this SimpleSpecs specification template to specify U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) 4.0 certification. Other versions of LEED Sustainable Project Requirements may be utilized with appropriate modifications to the text.

According to U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) website, LEED “is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Available for virtually all building, community, and home project types, LEED provides a framework to create healthy, highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings.”

This section provides the framework for specifying a LEED facility.  Including statements of the level to be achieved and requirements for reporting, indoor air quality management, and construction waste management necessary to achieve that goal.

It is suggested that the LEED Project Checklist be included as an attachment.  So that the specific program requirements are available to all parties.

What is LEED?

LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a green building rating system developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). The LEED rating system provides a framework for designing, constructing, operating, and maintaining buildings that are environmentally sustainable and energy-efficient.

The LEED rating system awards points to buildings for meeting specific sustainability criteria in various categories.  Suchas sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation. The number of points awarded determines the building’s level of certification.  Which can range from Certified, Silver, Gold, to Platinum.

The LEED rating system encourages the use of environmentally friendly materials.  Such as recycled content and sustainably sourced wood.  And promotes energy efficiency by requiring buildings to use high-efficiency HVAC systems, lighting, and appliances. It also encourages the use of renewable energy sources.  Such as solar panels and wind turbines, and promotes water conservation through the use of low-flow plumbing fixtures and rainwater harvesting.

LEED certification can provide several benefits for building owners and occupants.  Including lower operating costs, improved indoor air quality, and a reduced environmental footprint. It can also increase a building’s value and attract tenants who prioritize sustainability.
