Comprehensive SpecsStructural Specs

Use this 3-part SimpleSpecs™ template to specify steel decking; floor and roof decking.

Decking can be field cut to length and to accommodate penetrations. Large openings may require supplemental support framing.  Acoustical decking is available that incorporates slots that allow sound to pass through the decking, to be absorbed by the material above the decking.

Decking is either fluted or corrugated depending on application and span. Decking is secured to structural framing by welding or mechanically fastening. As a general rule floor decking is galvanized since it will be in contact with concrete. Roof decking is often prime painted but galvanized decking is available where corrosion is expected and to prevent damage in the event of roof leaks, a common occurrence.

This section should be edited by or under the supervision of the project’s structural consultant.  Decking should be fabricated to Steel Deck Institute –  SDI Design Manual.

What is it?

A type of structural component used in the construction of buildings. It consists of a profiled steel sheet used as a base for poured-in-place concrete floors or as a permanent form for concrete slabs. Steel decking provides a strong and stable platform that can support heavy loads and resist the effects of fire, wind, and other environmental factors.

Why is it important?

Strength: Provides a strong and stable platform that can support heavy loads. This is essential for buildings that require large open spaces, such as warehouses, factories, and sports arenas.

Durability: Designed to withstand the effects of fire, wind, and other environmental factors. It is also resistant to rot, mold, and other forms of deterioration, which can help extend the life of the building.

Speed of construction: Easy to install, which can help reduce the time required for construction. Installed in all weather conditions, which can help keep construction schedules on track.

Sustainability: Made from recycled steel, which makes it an environmentally friendly choice. Also recycled at the end of its useful life.

Design flexibility: Customized to meet the specific needs of each project. It comes in a variety of profiles and thicknesses, tailored to the structural requirements of the building.
