What is it?
A cementitious faced XPS insulation board is a type of insulation board that is composed of extruded polystyrene (XPS) foam insulation with a cementitious facing material.
The XPS foam provides high thermal insulation value, as it is a closed-cell foam that resists heat transfer. The cementitious facing material provides a durable and moisture-resistant surface that can be used as a substrate for exterior finishes like stucco or masonry. It can also be used as a substrate for interior finishes like drywall or paneling.
The cementitious facing material is made of a cement-based mixture reinforced with fiberglass mesh. This creates a strong, durable, and impact-resistant surface that can withstand the elements and maintain its appearance over time.
Cementitious-faced XPS insulation boards are commonly used in commercial and residential construction applications for exterior walls, roofs, and foundation walls. They offer an excellent combination of thermal insulation, moisture resistance, and durability, making them a popular choice for a wide range of projects.
Key characteristics and applications:
- One-sided: These panels have insulation material on one side and a concrete-like facing on the other. The insulation layer provides thermal resistance, while the concrete facing offers a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish.
- Non-Structural: These panels are not designed to bear structural loads. They are typically used as cladding or facade elements in conjunction with a structural support system.
- Insulation Material: The insulation layer is commonly made extruded polystyrene (XPS). These materials have excellent thermal resistance properties, helping to increase energy efficiency in buildings.
- Concrete-Like Facing: The facing is made to mimic the appearance and texture of concrete. It provides a finished look to the building’s exterior while offering protection to the insulation layer.
- Installation: These panels are installed onto the exterior of a building’s structural framework. They are attached using mechanical fasteners or adhesive systems. Installation is typically straightforward, making it an efficient choice for construction projects.
- Applications: These panels are commonly used in both new construction and retrofit projects. They are suitable for a wide range of building types, including residential, commercial, and industrial structures.
- Benefits:
- Energy Efficiency: The insulation layer helps regulate the building’s temperature, reducing heating and cooling costs.
- Aesthetics: The concrete-like finish provides a modern and sleek appearance to the building’s exterior.
- Weather Resistance: The concrete facing offers protection against the elements, enhancing the durability of the building envelope.
- Versatility: These panels can be used in various climates and are compatible with different architectural styles.
