Masonry Cleaning

Use this 3 part master specification template to specify paint stripping and chemical masonry cleaning of existing surfaces.

Since there are a multitude of products that can be used for this purpose, field testing of actual substrate samples is typically required in order to determine materials and procedures which must be specified.

Chemical cleaners and paint strippers can be hazardous to persons and plant life and therefore should be used with extreme caution. Consult local codes and ordinances for regulations governing the use of these products and the containment of runoff.

In general, the weakest dilution of cleaning solution and lowest pressure spray are the most desirable. Strong cleaning solutions can burn or discolor the surface, and high pressure water can cause physical damage to the masonry. Water and chemical cleaning introduce moisture into the masonry, which can cause efflorescence, freeze spalling, and interior moisture accumulation.

Sandblasting of historic masonry is generally not recommended due to the high potential for physical damage to the masonry.

For additional information on this subject, refer to the following:

Preservation Briefs by the National Park Service, www.nps.gov:

–  No. 1 – Cleaning and Water Repellent Treatments for Historic Masonry Buildings.

–  No. 6 – Dangers of Abrasive Cleaning to Historic Buildings.
