Wood Trim

Use this 3 part SimpleSpecs master specification to specify interior and exterior wood trim.

This section utilizes the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) Quality Standards as a basis.

  • Other organizations’ standards including the Woodwork Institute of California (WIC) are not included since they are more regional in coverage but can be added to this section.

Premium Grade trim must meet higher standards than Custom Grade.

Interior trim may be either wood or medium density fiberboard. Exterior wood trim is typically wood. Trim may be either shop or field finished with transparent or opaque finishes.

Specialty products such as thermally modified woods are not included but may be added to this section.

Close grain refers to a wood with closely spaced wood graining, which increases the wood’s hardness.

Galvanized or stainless steel fasteners should be used for exterior trim and interior trim in locations subject to high humidity.

For assistance in selecting and specifying refer to the Architectural Woodwork Standards by the Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI), available at www.awinet.org.
