Use this section to specify door hardware for aluminum, steel, wood, and laminated plastic doors.
This section is referenced from numerous other sections, including for products such as aluminum entrances where most hardware is provided by the door manufacturer, requiring only cylinders so as to provide for facility-wide keying.
This section includes hardware for hinged metal, wood, and laminated plastic doors.
Hardware for sliding doors is not included but can be added.
Most hardware for the electronic operation and monitoring of doors is typically not included except where it is integral to other door hardware, due to the wide diversity of available products and the fact that many of these components must be installed by licensed electricians. Careful coordination with the building’s security system is required to ensure proper operation. Electrical components such as card readers, infrared sensors, and door status switches are typically specified as part of the security system in Division 28 – Electronic Safety and Security.
In general fire-rated doors must:
- Be self-closing and self-latching. This may be provided by a door closer or spring hinges. Door closers allow for adjustment of closing and latching speeds; spring hinges do not.
- Utilize steel ball-bearing hinges. Hinges may be plated to match other hardware.
- Include smoke seals at heads, jambs, sills, and meeting stiles.
