Use this 3 part SimpleSpecs™ master specification to specify hollow metal doors and frames fabricated from cold-rolled steel, galvanized steel, or aluminum-zinc alloy coated steel sheet.

Exterior hollow metal doors typically have insulated cores and should be specified as galvanized or galvannealed steel to minimize corrosion.

Glazed exterior hollow metal frames can be a source of water infiltration since they do not incorporate a weep drainage system.

Interior hollow metal doors are commonly specified with honeycomb cores in lieu of vertical steel stiffeners; the faces are flatter since no welds are used to secure the core to the faces.

Special fire-rated cores are required on fire-rated doors with higher fire ratings. Fire-rated doors and frames must conform to the listing to which they were tested. In general, doors must be self-closing and require smoke seals.

Hollow metal doors and frames are typically shop primed and field painted.
