Use this 3-part SimpleSpec™ master specification to specify joint sealers for exterior and interior applications.

This section is referenced in numerous other sections where joint sealers are required as a part of the work of that section.

Sealers are used to close gaps between materials to provide a weatherseal and visual continuity. Many sealers are permanently flexible to allow for movement without damage to the sealer.  Sealers are available for exterior and interior use in a wide range of conditions.

Careful consideration of joint sealer types is required to ensure success, including joint dimensions, anticipated movement, the potential for pedestrian or vehicular traffic, and acoustical requirements.

Specialty sealers, such as pick-proof and very high-performance sealers, are not included in this section but can be added.

Many design professionals request custom colors as a matter of course, but this can be problematic. As a general rule, single-part sealers are not available in custom colors unless sufficient quantities are involved to justify the additional cost to the manufacturer to produce non-standard colors. Two-part sealers are more often available in custom colors since changing the color typically involves changing only one component.

Sealers specified in this section are not approved firestop systems. Refer to SimpleSpecs™ master specification Section 07 84 00 Firestopping for joint sealers that can be used as firestops.
