Use this CSI 3 part SimpleSpecs™ master specification to specify manufactured roof hatches, either galvanized steel or aluminum, single or double leaf, in ladder, stair, or steep stair (ships ladder) configurations.
Hatches provide for roof access where a penthouse and standard door are not provided.
The current edition of the International Building Code (IBC) requires that ladder access hatches be a minimum of 16 square feet with a minimum opening dimension of 2 feet. It also requires that protective railings be installed where the hatch is located with 10 feet of the roof edge.
Current OSHA requirements state that ladders over 24 feet in length be provided with a personal fall protection system. Refer to SimpleSpecs™ Master Specification Section 05 50 00 – Metal Fabrications for ladders and fall protection equipment.
Ladder extensions provide assistance in exiting and entering ladder-access roof hatches.
